Renewal of international space station participation - good for Canada

February 29, 2012

Richmond, B.C. - MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd. (TSX: MDA), a provider of essential information solutions, today praised the Government of Canada and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) on its announcement to renew Canada’s participation in the international space station (ISS).

The announcement, made by Industry Minister Christian Paradis and the CSA President Steve Maclean, coincided with a meeting of the heads of space agencies of the international space station partners taking place this week in Quebec City. The extension to Canada’s participation in the ISS covers the 2015-2020 period.

‘We see this as a strong signal from the Government that it recognizes the strategic importance of space robotics’, said Craig Thornton, MDA’s general manager of robotics. MDA is Canada’s leading space technology company and the world leader in space robotics. ‘This is the kind of decision that helps to support Canada’s high tech jobs, our worldwide leadership in space robotics as well as our competitiveness.’

MDA is the prime contractor for Canada’s contribution to the ISS. Canada provided Canadarm2, a mobile robotic arm that was critical in the construction of the ISS, and Dextre, the world’s most sophisticated space robot that is involved in delicate assembly and maintenance work. Both of these robots, along with a mobile base system, were designed and built by MDA. MDA also provided, on contract to NASA, a robotic work station and to The Boeing Company, communications antennae that carry digital video and data between Earth and the space station.

MDA looks forward to working with the Canadian government and the CSA to maximize the benefits of this renewed participation for both Canada and the Canadian space industry.
